Voice of Byron regular, Mike Watterson, shares his refreshing perspective on all the current talk about shark attacks and deaths.
Mike says, “SHARKS – shark stories plastered over today’s – The Australian and Sydney Morning Herald.
“To give some perspective to the dangers they pose, over the Xmas – New Year period their have been 41 lives lost on Australian roads – same period no fatal shark attacks.
“As a further comparison in the 20 years since the Port Arthur massacre over 30.000 Australian lives have been lost in vehicle related accidents.
“As I often repeat – just because a shark is swimming with you statistics confirm it is highly unlikely it will bite you.
“Again today, as every morning, I swam past the canal entrance in the Maroochy River where last year seven (7) Bull sharks became trapped in that particular canal – l didn’t see any today nor do I ever think about them.”
