STRANGE AND very rare creatures found on Clarkes Beach are definitely not alien, they’re just in town to eat as many bluebottles and jellyfish as they can.

Regular visitor to Byron Bay, Jenny Mina, was fascinated when she spotted the tiny creatures at Clarkes Beach on Thursday Dec 29, same day as the Voice of Byron editor’s birthday.

Ms Mina said the creatures, known as Glaucus Atlanticus, feed on jellyfish, are reasonably rare to see washed up and ‘can sting’.

The blue glaucus occurs in temperate and tropical waters throughout the world’s oceans and floats upside down on the ocean’s surface.

Glaucus Atlanticus was discovered during Captain Cook’s second voyage to the Pacific, in HMS Resolution. Aboard the ship were the scientists Johann Reinhold Forster and Johann George Adam Forster (his son) who first described the animal in a 1777 publication.
