Labor Says Suffolk Park Land Should Have Been Free

ACTING SECRETARY of Byron Bay Labor, Asren Pugh, has criticised Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson’s deal for Council to purchase the Suffolk Park sports field for $900,000, telling Echonetdaily that if they had been properly conducted, Labor’s policy to see the land gifted to the community could have been achieved.

Asren has effectively lobbed a hand grenade into the middle of the council chambers, accusing ‘recent and current council leadership’, including current and previous Greens mayors Simon Richardson and Jan Barham, of being ‘unable to deliver for our shire.’

But he goes further, saying the Greens have ‘terrible relationships’ with state and federal governments, are ‘simply ignored’, and are ‘unable to lobby effectively’.

‘This is why you need people leading council who have some access to governments and an ability to effectively negotiate with them,’ he said.

    The track record of the Greens in the Shire speaks for itself. Illogical and emotional decisions made in the past haunt and plague any current or future Council!

    Fix the the roads, remember that the Byron Shire is more than Byron!

    Perhaps the Mayor could explain the reasons for spending so much money while on the other hand seeking to rip more $ from rate payers!

    Well, Gee Asren. I wonder why the Greens are ignored & lacking in negotiation ability. It’s because Labor & Liberal governments only want to talk to like minded, sympathetic & compliant people……not “radical” greens or “maveric” independants. It all has to do with political bias as your statement demonstrates.
