Team Effort: Rethinking How We Play

FROM SURFING to soccer; from laughter yoga to competitive triathlons, movement and play are key forces that invigorate our lives.

While the benefits of childhood play are widely known, there are also major physical, mental, emotional and social benefits for adults of all abilities who are involved in play.

With this in mind, local clubs, coaches, volunteers, teachers and instructors are invited to join in conversation with a line up of inclusion experts at the upcoming forum, A Team Effort, scheduled for Monday 12 September at the Cavanbah Centre.

As part of the lineup, Jackie Lauff, international sport and development practitioner and CEO of Sports Matters, will discuss how groups, studios and communities can welcome all people, including people with disability to their activities.

“Sport and recreation create opportunities for people to be active, healthy and included in their communities,” Ms Lauff said.

At the same time, becoming more inclusive presents opportunities to connect with new players, participants, coaches, members, volunteers, fans and sponsors.

Presenters and panel members for the interactive community discussion include local people with disability, Spaghetti Circus, Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), Lennox Head-Alstonville SLSC, Creature Yoga and more.

The project is a partnership of Byron Shire Council, Far North Coast Ability Links, Spinal Cord Injuries Australia and Autism Spectrum Australia and is funded by the NSW Government.

A Team Effort, Monday 12 September, 5-7pm, Cavanbah Centre, Ewingsdale. Free entry, supper provided, call or Damien Becker from Ability Links on 0408 976 842 to register.
