AN OCEAN Shores resident in Hardy Avenue, in the Tread Lightly Estate, has narrowly escaped serious injury, or even death, after being terrorized by a local dog.
Ellie L’Echinda of Hardy Avenue was attacked last week by a neighbouring dog while relaxing in her yard.
Moments before the dog sunk its teeth into Ellie, its owner hauled it away, and Ellie was safe.
“I was sure I was going to be torn apart,” said Ellie. “I was certain my life at Hardy Avenue was at an end.”
Byron Shire Council has replied to enquiries by another Hardy Avenue resident about the legality of dogs living in a designated no-dog area of the Shire.
“Please be advised that Council’s legal services area is currently reviewing recent court cases and the legal advice regarding this matter to finalise the options for the enforcement of the dog prohibited covenant within the “Tread Lightly Estate”.
“Once this review has been completed it is proposed that this matter will again be reported to the newly elected Council in October 2016 for consideration.”
There are only two designated dog- and cat-free areas in Byron Shire – the other being Lilli Pilli Drive off Old Cemetery Road, Byron Bay.
It’s long overdue that Byron Council shows some moral integrity and legal initiative in upholding its own bi-law re a designated dog-free zoning.
It should be enforced, so much beautiful wildlife around the lake..
