BYRON BAY’S fashion brand Spell and the Gypsy Collective has been named Australian Small Business of the year at the 2016 Telstra Australian Small Business Awards, held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney over the weekend.
Spell and the Gypsy Collective’s unique, vintage-inspired designs are worn by international celebrities like Brazilian supermodel, Alessandra Ambrosio and singers, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus.
Sisters Elizabeth Abegg and Isabella Pennefather founded the business in 2009, tapping into the 20-45 year old female demographic looking for unique gypsy prints and vintage inspired laces.
Their growing business, which sells 70 per cent of their products online, recently engaged Australian supermodel Shanina Shaik in their May/June 2016 Revolver collection in a hot photo shoot in the outback, near Broken Hill.
Ms Pennefather is the label’s head designer, responsible for creating the six collections the label launches each year while Ms Abegg runs the head office.
Spell and The Gypsy Collective itself has a social media following of more than 800,000, and cites this presence across multiple platforms as central to its international growth and success.
Spell and The Gypsy Collective employs 50 women across its Byron Bay based warehouse, office and flagship boutique.
I am proud to be one of the 50 women employed by Spell.
I love the designs and am inspired by the motivation and direction of The Gypsy Collective.
Well done, and thanks for making me part of the team…
