Sandhills Childcare Centre, Bangalow’s Heritage House Win $575,000 in Grants

BYRON SHIRE Mayor Simon Richardson and Nationals MLC Ben Franklin recently announced $320,000 for an extension and refurbishment works at Heritage House in Bangalow, and $255,000 for improved facilities at Sandhills Childcare Centre in Byron Bay.

“Two weeks ago we were announcing over $420,000 for Waterlily Park in Ocean Shores, and now Council is thrilled to learn of the success of two further grant applications through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund,” Mayor Simon Richardson said.

Byron Shire Allocated $1.7 million in Community Infrastructure Grants

DESCRIBED AS an opportunity that is almost too good to be true, the NSW Government has allocated $1.7 million to the Byron Shire to fund community infrastructure projects that will improve the quality of life for residents.

Jodi Frawley, Byron Shire Council’s Grants Coordinator, said the money was available from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund and is exciting news for groups who are prepared to make an application.

Byron Shire Council Calls for Community Input to Manage Local Waterhole and Lookout

BYRON SHIRE Council is hoping to work with local residents and interested community members to develop a plan to manage the large increase in visitor numbers to the waterhole at Keyes Bridge Reserve near Federal and Scarabelotti’s Lookout on Coolamon Scenic Drive. 

Mark Arnold, Acting General Manager, said the decision was made at the March Council meeting after a Notice of Motion from Cr Basil Cameron.

BYRON COMMUNITY based not-for-profit WaterPlaces will host a film night and fundraiser at Marvell Hall (formerly the Senior Citizens Centre), at 37 Marvell Street, Byron Bay.

Featured films will be For Love Of Water: FLOW, an award winning documentary by Irena Salina about the industry and consumption of humankind’s most precious resource – water – and also Carriberrie a new Aboriginal Australia dance film narrated by David Gulpilil, and featuring the Dubay Arakwal dancers with Bangarra and 7 other groups.

BYRON SHIRE Council has been anticipating the reintroduction of a waste levy on the waste it sends to Queensland and this is being taken into account as part of its Integrated Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy which is currently being revised.

Lloyd Isaacson, Byron Shire Council’s Team Leader Resource Recovery, said Council will model the financial impacts as more information comes to light on the timeframes, structure and amount of the Queensland levy.

Byron Shire Council to Hold Workshops on Feral Pests

RESIDENTS IN the Byron Shire who are interested in, or concerned, about pest animals are encouraged to attend a community workshop at the Mullumbimby Civic Hall on 28 March.

The workshops will be organised like a café, where stakeholders will be encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences with pest animals in the Byron Shire, including foxes, wild dogs and feral cats.

Public Hearing for Police Involved in Violent Byron Bay Arrest

THE NSW police watchdog will hold a public hearing next week to determine whether or not the officers who forcefully arrested a naked, 16-year-old youth in Byron earlier this year engaged in ‘serious misconduct’.

But some locals are questioning why the hearing is taking place in Sydney, which effectively prevents the community from seeing justice done.
