Byron Council GM Disappointed After Attempts to Help Bike Shop Backfire

“UNGRATEFUL AND extremely disappointing” is how Byron Shire Council’s General Manager, Ken Gainger, is describing a small business owner who was allowed to set up shop in a prime site in Byron Bay’s CBD for 12 months rent-free. 

“The owner of a solar, charged electric bike hire company approached Council in August 2016, asking us, as a show of support for start-up businesses, to allow him to operate from a prominent location in the Byron Bay CBD such as a car park,” Mr Gainger said.

Council Blitzes Illegal Campers in Over 1100 Holiday Infringement Notices

THE CHRISTMAS and New Year period was busy for Byron Shire Council’s Enforcement team with 11 staff working early and finishing late to address illegal camping.

“There were no holidays for our Enforcement team in response to ongoing concerns from our community about illegal campers and their behaviour and to let these people know that setting up vans and camping on beaches and in residential streets is not okay any time of the year,” Council’s Director, Sustainable Environment and Economy, Shannon Burt said.

June Passed peacefully on Tuesday 9th January 2018, aged 91½.

Wife of Percy (dec’d), and loved Mother and Mother-in-law of Paul and Susan and Debra and David Ferguson, beloved Grandmother to 8 and Great-Grandmother to 4.

A Memorial service will be held at 10am, Monday 15th January, at Brunswick Heads Anglican Church.

June & Percy lived in Brunswick Heads since 1969, and previously Mullumbimby. They were well known in the Byron area for the bus company at Mullumbimby until 1969, and the Orchid Nursery and Florist in Brunswick.

Percy Sheaffe passed away in 2008, and June has been in Coolamon Villa (Mullumbimby) for the past couple of years.

Byron Music Festivals Under Threat if Redevelopment Rejected

THE NORTH BYRON Parklands, near Byron Bay on the NSW North Coast, is home to two of Australia’s largest music festivals, which attract tens of thousands of music fans and, organisers say, millions of dollars to the region’s economy.

However, a $42 million proposal to create a permanent festival site for up to 50,000 people has raised concerns that the staging of events such as Splendour in the Grass and the Falls Festival harms the environment, creates traffic and transport problems and affects the amenity of locals.
